The United States has sanctioned Iran’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, Nobitex, along with three other exchanges and four individuals. According to the U.S. Treasury Department, these actions target entities accused of helping Iran evade sanctions and support terrorist activities. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated the move is part of the ongoing “maximum pressure campaign” against the Iranian regime.
The U.S. Department of the Treasury has imposed sanctions on four Iran-based digital asset exchanges, including the country’s largest platform, Nobitex. The sanctioned entities also include Bitpin, Ramzinex, and Wallex, along with four Iranian nationals.
“While Iran’s economy is in free fall, the regime has chosen to co-opt digital asset technologies for its own corrupt agenda, including evading sanctions and transferring wealth out of the country,” said Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. He framed the economic pressure as a success of the administration’s policy.
The Treasury alleges Nobitex facilitated payments for Iran’s terrorist activities and sanctions evasion. The exchange is also accused of helping the Central Bank of Iran access hundreds of millions of dollars in stablecoins to support the Iranian rial.
Nobitex processed more than 50 percent of all Iranian digital asset inflows in 2025. This made it a key alternative for the nation’s monetary system amid decades of international sanctions.
The action follows recent U.S. sanctions on Iran’s newly created Persian Gulf Strait Authority. The Treasury Department previously labeled that agency a “scheme to extort international shipping.”
